Will you stay, leave them behind or kill them because they could betray the Teacup Kingdom later with the knowledge they have?” I N T E R P R E T A T I O N The lyrics of “If” describe the pain of existence in waiting for an unknown tomorrow and inevitable end. As Kyo debates turning her back on her sisters for the sake of forbidden love /a love for the fallen Coffee Kingdom’s princess/, she is trapped in this painful waiting--unable to be acknowledged as a succubus due to betraying her sisters and the Teacup Kingdom or acknowledged as a human by the princess due to her demon form. As Celastrus sing “If,” they bemoan this conflict and their painful existence as succubi, unable to love and be accepted by humans. These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.” What makes beauty ugly? I N T E R P R E T A T I O N "If" describes the struggle for life coming to a standstill, in which dwelling on the past and present prevents one from envisioning the future. Beauty emerges from growth and change; stagnation results in the decay of this development, leading to a reversion of progress. In interacting with the soldiers of the Teacup Kingdom, the Celastrus succubi were put in a situation where they were required to interact somewhat cordially with their fellow countrymen, gaining an appreciative view of a different world and culture. In the process they began to adopt human characteristics, as reflected in the characters without their demon wings during the former half of the animation, cumulating to Kyo's forbidden affair. She is caught in a halfway state of belonging to neither the human nor succubi race. This conflict slowly destroys the sisters' relationship as their wings, a symbol of their succubi inheritance, begin to tatter. Kyo's actions finally pushes her sisters' mindframe back into that of the true succubi and they revert back to their full demon form, resplendent with unmarred wings. The deterioration of the sisters' once-beautiful relationship is documented through the state of their wings. The pyxis fairies are content to sit back and watch this tale of forbidden love unfold. After all, it was certainly not the first time the lines of duty and love have blurred, as the ancient legend of the Celastrus paniculatus tea can attest. Now, only time will tell if this story will reach the same tragic end...
