From April 9–12, 1917, the storied Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought between Canadian and German troops. The Canadian victory, which came at the cost of more than 10,000 lives, was seen as a defining moment in the birth of the nation. In 2017, the NFB commemorated the battle with Return to Vimy, a groundbreaking film that combines colourized archival footage and animation. It was the first time the NFB colourized its own archives for a film project, shedding unprecedented light on the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) film collection. This is a demonstration of the painstaking process used.
