Description: Today at the Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez IV weigh-in, all of the fighters and co-main event fighters made weight on their first try. The crowd was a mix of Mexican, Mexican-American, Filipino and Filipino-American fans. Some fans held banners that went as far as saying, "Manny Pacquiao For President," while others had over sized sombreros with the Mexican flag colors. Fans of Pacquiao chanted, "Manny! Manny! Manny!" Fans of Marquez fired back with a song that basically goes like, "whoa whoa whoa Marquez! Marquez!" Jaun hit the scales first and weighed in at 143lbs. He looked very strong and ripped, possibly the biggest he has ever looked, much like a body builder. Manny came in at the welterweight limit again at 147lbs on the dot. He looked lean, much like he did at the Bradley fight weigh-in. The two fighters came face to face for the stare down and I was pleased to see that Manny did not smile this time, as he's been smiling during his more recent fights. The fact that he did not smile gives me hope that he may be taking this fight more seriously. He is focused, or at least knows he is in for a hard long fight, so he needs to bring it on Saturday. The fans were loud and excited for their fighters in the packed MGM Grand Garden Arena. However, the overall atmosphere was a lot more tame than the previous weigh-ins for Manny's fights against Cotto,De La Hoya and even Margarito. Could this be a sign of the decreasing popularity of the Pac-Man? Or have many of the same fans seen this fight too many times already? Either way, the fight is reportedly sold out already and is doing a live gate of $10.5 million. In the co-main event, Yuriorkis Gamboa came to the stage with his new promoter, 50 Cent, and was probably the highlight of the event. As the Jumbotron showed the highlight reel of Gamboa's knockdowns, 50 Cent had his new song with Eminem playing to hype up the crowd. Gamboa looked great. His body was in amazing shape and it looked as if he was still training during his 15 month layoff due to promotional problems. Gamboa's opponent, Michael Farenas, is a Filipino fighter who is under the MP promotions banner, Manny Pacquiao's fight promotions company. Farenas is pretty much unknown and appeared to be a bit timid being on such a big stage, in such a big fight event. Perhaps Farenas was selected to make Gamboa look extra incredible in his big, comeback fight. Mike Tyson was also on stage to promote his charity function taking place at the MGM Grand on Friday night. Much of the fans gave him love and cheered for him as he screamed back saying, "you better come out tonight." After Manny and Juan weighed-in, Larry Merchant asked them both a few questions going into Saturday's fight. Larry asked Juan if bigger muscles help him win fights. Juan responded that it's not only muscles, it's also intelligence, skills and the total package that wins fights. Larry then questioned Manny's heart and focus in boxing, basically asking him if the politics and out of the ring distractions prevent him from giving his all inside the ring. Manny gave a very vague answer. So Larry decided to be more blunt and to the point, asking Manny, "Do you still have the fire in your belly to do this?" Manny replied, "Yes sir." One interesting thing to note was when Larry brought up Manny and politics, many fans began to booed? Very interesting? I'm not quite sure who was booing exactly. The Marquez fans, or perhaps the Filipino fans who may not agree with Manny doing politics? But there was definitely booing going on. The overall vibe among the media center is that Marquez will finally win on Saturday night. In the media center, I obtained a great interview with former pound-for-pound legend Roy Jones Jr. He was demonstrating to Harold Lederman how to avoid getting hit upstairs when you are going for a body shot. That interview will be up on Monday. Roger Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather's trainer and uncle, was answering questions from the media. Bob Arum walked up to him to slap his hat in a friendly manner. Bob stated that he and Roger are close and he promoted a number of his fights. Bob also stated that Floyd's father, Floyd Mayweather Senior, was also close to him as well and even slept in one of his offices. Ben Thompson of Fight Hype has told me that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not in Las Vegas this weekend and is on the east coast.
