Description:

These instructions and detailed video show a step-by-step thermostat housing unit replacement on a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 but will be similar for Dodge Ram 2500 models from 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. These replacement instructions will also be similar for any Dodge or Chrysler vehicle equipped with a 6.4L V8 engine. Replacing a failing thermostat and any other cooling system components helps you maintain a safe, functioning cooling system and can prevent permanent damage to your truck’s engine due to overheating. Performing a Ram 2500 thermostat replacement can save you time and money, and can help eliminate a more costly repair in the future. If you notice that your Ram overheats, has a coolant leak, takes a long time to heat up, does not heat up at all, is overheating, or if the heater fails to produce warm air from the vents, you should inspect or replace the thermostat and thermostat housing as soon as possible to prevent more severe engine damage. Find the thermostat housings, replacement thermostats, coolant, and more at O’Reilly Auto Parts, where we carry everything you need to service your Dodge Ram 2500.

Your 2002-2008 Dodge Ram 2500’s thermostat helps regulate your truck’s engine temperature by closing to allow coolant to reach operating temperature and transporting coolant back to the radiator for cooling as needed. Thermostats are designed to open at close at specific operating temperatures and may fail over time. Thermostats can become stuck in the open or closed position, causing coolant to flow without restriction and slow the time to reach operating temperature or become stagnant and overheat. Performance issues in your Ram, failure to reach operating temperature in a timely manner, and a malfunctioning or non-working heater may point to a thermostat that is stuck open. A thermostat that is stuck closed will typically lead to overheating and may cause a blown head gasket, warped cylinder heads, or other engine and cooling system damage. If your Ram 2500’s thermostat housing, thermostat, or thermostat gasket is failing, you may also experience coolant leaks and may notice a puddle of coolant beneath your truck. It’s a good idea to replace a failing thermostat and thermostat housing to prevent coolant leaks that can lead to engine seizing, damage, or failure. These step-by-step instructions and video will help you perform a thermostat housing and thermostat replacement on your 2002-2008 Dodge Ram 2500 the right way for a lasting repair.
