Participo en este acto, en este emocionante acto, en el que conmemoramos algo que fue un hecho esencial para el feliz cumplimiento de la transición democrática en España. Porque el asesinato de los abogados de Atocha, que trataba de provocar una crisis en aquel proceso de cambio y de volver atrás, con el heroísmo de estos hombres y mujeres, y con la reacción formidable del pueblo de Madrid se transformó en un hecho decisivo a partir del cual la transición democrática era ya algo inevitable Porque fue al día siguiente del entierro de los abogados de atocha cuando en el diario ya se publico un editorial diciendo "después de esto ya no es posible mantener la ilegalidad del Partido Comunista de España", fue después de ese acto que demostró la fuerza popular del Partido Comunista de España, porque el Partido Comunista en aquella época estaba sólidamente ligado y relacionado con el movimiento ciudadano, con Comisiones Obreras, con el movimiento intelectual y estudiantil... era, en cierto modo, el alma de aquel movimiento, el Partido Comunista llegó a ser el partido del antifranquismo, y, la legalización del Partido Comunista fue el gesto fundamental en todo aquel proceso de transición. Ahora, al evocar esos treinta años, lo hacemos en un momento en que el interés por recuperar la Memoria Histórica ha alcanzado un amplio desarrollo, y sería triste que se enterrase en la simple creación de algunos organismos burocráticos encargados de distinguir quien resistió, quien no resistió... que no fuera una condena radical de los procesos del Tribunal contra la Masonería y el Comunismo, que no fuera una condenación y una anulación radical de los procesos del Tribunal de Orden Público, y que no anulara las sentencias de los Tribunales Militares de excepción que en juicios sumarísimos, a partir del fin de la guerra condenaron a muerte a miles y miles de personas cuyo único delito había sido defender la República Y si gritan, que griten, lo importante es que la izquierda y los demócratas de este país no se arruguen, no se asusten, no se intimiden, no estamos en 1936, estamos en el Siglo XXI, y a pesar de toda su fuerza, de todas sus intrigas, de todas sus manipulaciones, yo estoy convencido de que la democracia y las fuerzas de progreso terminarán venciendo en este país y limpiando las miasmas, las miasmas que todavía flotan dentro de este país. --- Intervention of Santiago Carrillo, former general secretary of the Communist Party of Spain and member of its Central Committee, in the act of tribute held at the Ateneo de Madrid coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the terrorist attack against the office of labor lawyers in the street Atocha.
