Description:

From http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com Woohoo another ride on the new Beta Xtrainer before heading over to Canada. As usual we are heading out to test ourselves against some of our favourite technical sections, which will eventually lead to my brother attempting to decapitate himself. When it comes to slow technical terrain it feels like I'm cheating with the Italian pocket rocket. Some of our trickier sections are tougher than usual after some overnight rain... but the Xtrainer deals with it nicely. We decide it's a bit too risky so time for a u-turn and out of the gully an easier way. Ahead is Jeff on the KTM 350. The more we do of this riding, the more he wants to swap over to a two stroke but he's still gets the pumpkin through this terrain well... especially a series of nasty wet tree roots here that trip most of us up... most of the time. I have trouble even with the chicken route.

This wet sandstone climb is a good opportunity to test out our traction control. Even dry it is tricky due a fine layer of dust. Four stroke has a natural advantage here but Scotty and I have been learning to slip the clutch in second gear to tame that snappy two stroke power.

It ain't pretty, but a lot of leg paddling while keeping the rear wheel weighted eventually gets the Xtrainer up these rutted climbs.
Even Scottty the clutch meister is stalling occasionally on these climbs.
And then Jeff decides to try and remove his head.
Talk about freak accidents. I turned the camera off immediately but Jeff couldn't talk with his neck pinched, and it took a while to work out what was wrong and then lift the bike off his neck.
This series of rutted climbs eventually ends in a short but extremely steep climb that usually tempts us to stain our underwear.

As usual a few hours of this has us completely beat so it's a cruisy ride back to base, thankfully with our heads still on our shoulders. Dirt riding is a risky, dirty, expensive and tiring hobby but there's nothing we'd rather be doing on a Sunday morning. Amen.
