Schrade SCAXE2: Not Cold-Friendly!

In July 2021, YouTube set all unlisted videos uploaded before 2017 to private (unless the channel owner had opted out). In the weeks leading up to this change, Archive Team archived many pre-2017 unlisted YouTube videos. If this video was uploaded before 2017 and has gone private, there is a chance that a 360p archived version can be viewed on archive.org via the site's Wayback Machine as follows:

1. Enter the YouTube URL in the Wayback Machine form or click on the following link:

2. Right-click on a blue entry in July in the calendar.

3. Click 'Copy link address'.

4. Paste the copied link address into your web browser's address bar and press enter.

Description:

Preparedmind101 began this video review with the intention of showing how well the Schrade SCAXE2 worked as a tool. After all, I had been hacking and hammering with it relentlessly for a couple months. However, fate stepped in and the axes Achilles heel was accidentally discovered. I did the review on a day when it was about 0 degrees F. Almost immediately, the handle snapped in half. Obviously, given my previous experience with it, I was shocked.

Extreme cold and thermoplastic are NOT like chocolate and peanut butter. They are more like oil and water. Similarly, the day before I broke a number of ABS tent stakes that normally you can beat the hell out of due to the extreme cold.

I don't believe Schrade could have seen this coming unless they tested it in a freezer. I have no doubt in the tool in warmer temperatures...even in the 30s. But extreme cold apparently turns the handle material brittle.

I'm posting the video to illustrate two things: The first, how much I obviously liked it before the break, and two the safety hazard current owners need to know in case they are planning on using it in extreme cold. Extreme cold can ruin a LOT of things, not just things made by Schrade. I do not believe this means Schrade made a bad product. It just means it is thermoplastic, and it doesn't mix well it crazy ass cold.
