Description:

From http://www.crosstrainingenduro.com Priscilla the pig say geez I'm dry I'd love a beer. And visitors do regularly buy her one, but I think my cheap red wine might not go down so well.
This two days of Tasmanian dirt riding has been organised by Ben Crowley, dark overlord of the Bulk Nutrients empire. Mathinna is a huge state forest with all sorts of terrain and we'll be exploring it with a seedy bunch of Tasmanian reprobates. Only a few minutes out and the views are impresive already. The climb up from the valley looks easy but very loose soil makes it a challenge. This place really is paradise for Tasmanian dirt riding. Along these rocky ridges you can go off the track and choose different level of difficulty, or just stick with the track and enjoy the scenery.

We hit some brilliant sandy tracks with this Tasmanian dirt riding where the YZ250FX is in its element, the little four stroke just eats this stuff up for breakfast. Ben is riding its motocross cousin, the YZ250F so I suggest filming him through the sandy tracks. Ben has been working on his speed lately and while this pace is a lot of fun it's way outside my comfort zone. And the strange thing is this new Sony Action cam is so smooth with its image stabilisation it looks slower and easier than it felt.

From a cross training angle thi place is amazing, there are sections like this we could spend the whole morning just finding rocks and logs to practice on. Ben and I spent a fair bit of time talking about how much fun it can be riding smaller capacity bikes, and how most of us can actually be faster with a smaller engine. It's easy to get addicted to power and fool ourselves we can actually use 50 horsepower but for many of us these small bikes are so much less intimidating that we will ride better and faster with less power.

As I get more confident on the YZ250FX I start to bunny hop it and trying to flick it sideways off kickers like tree roots, which of course eventually goes wrong. As does my attempt to ram Ben Crowley as payback for his terrible navigation skills as lead rider. Like many Tasmanians, Ben is illiterate so we spend at least half the day sitting around as he stares at his GPS, unaware he is holding it upside down. Eventually we wind our way back to the pub in the paddock for some well deserved beers, hot meal and tall storie about how well we rode. Then tomorrow we'll do it all again in some of the rainforest sections of Mathinna. Coming soon to a Youtube channel near you.
