MAXIMIZE MUSCLE with the PERFECT Rep: How to Lift Weights

In July 2021, YouTube set all unlisted videos uploaded before 2017 to private (unless the channel owner had opted out). In the weeks leading up to this change, Archive Team archived many pre-2017 unlisted YouTube videos. If this video was uploaded before 2017 and has gone private, there is a chance that a 360p archived version can be viewed on archive.org via the site's Wayback Machine as follows:

1. Enter the YouTube URL in the Wayback Machine form or click on the following link:

There are some things that are perfect in life.

Jessica Biel's ass
A whole roasted lamb
The Super Bowl

Today we are after perfection in TRAINING. What I mean is when you break down training, you have exercise selection, volume, intensity, speed and duration. What we are going to focus on today is TEMPO which is one of the most confusing parts of training.

I mean how FAST should you lift on the way up and how SLOW should you go on the way down? If you have ever read a two bit trainer's manual or Kin book, you will see all sorts of tempos. Things like 5 seconds on the way down 5 seconds on the way up, 4 seconds on the way down, pause and 2 seconds on the way up.

However, don't get caught up in hype. In general, one of the most useful for most methods of training is the 3010 tempo for most exercises. This means to take 3 seconds on the way down, no pause at the bottom 1 second on the way up.

LETS get a demonstration Traditional Tempo 3010

But bun that, I'm not normal and neither are you if you want to get MORE out of training. We are going to change this traditional tempo into something better.

I call it the S0X0 tempo. S stands for slow, I don't want you to COUNT while you lift, so forget taking three seconds, just lower the weight in a controlled way. X stands for EXPLOSIVE, I want you to lift as FAST as possible on the way up.

Lets demonstrate

Correct Tempo S0X0
FAST on the way up, controlled on the way down.

FALSE Tempo
Now NOTE this incorrect tempo, the weight is being DROPPED and is NOT being controlled, dominate the weight! Don't be owned by it!

CORRECT Tempo Again

Now there are a MILLION different types of tempo out there and A LOT of them can work in the RIGHT program. What happens with most people however is they assemble a Frankenstein program. They will do slow eccentric work with German Volume training mixed with Westside Powerlifting and end up with the body of a 12 year old girl.

The reason I recommend an EXPLOSIVE concentric tempo is extremely simple.

1) It recruits the MOST amount of fast twitch muscle fibres, which are important for growth
2) Its the least neutrally draining so you can handle a higher volume
3) It has immediate carry-over to other methods of training so its "functional"
4) It assists in developing strength which is useful for everything.
