What makes a physique attractive
So Greg let me start by saying that the thing that I liked most about your site when I came across it was that you made me understand what the ingredients for an awesome physique really are. You gave certain proportions to strive for, you talked about why gaining muscle strategically in certain parts of the body is much better than just gaining size and also why staying lean is so important. So do you want to talk about that first? The kinobody philosophy.
One idea that really was an AHA moment for me was the idea if getting lean first. Losing fat and getting the waist down a few inches makes the biggest difference in your physique. And I've observed that one of the biggest obstacles some people face is "the purgatory" - you know that moment when you are unhappy with your size but also unhappy with your definition. So these guys don't want to cut because they're afraid of looking to skinny but also don't want to gain size because they'd get even fatter. To overcome this you must accept to be a little smaller than you'd like or a little fatter that you'd like. But getting leaner first is almost always the better choice. What are your thoughts on this Greg?
Why relative strength should be the main focus of the natural lifter
Can you expand on this Greg?
Getting stronger in a medium rep range is the primary driver of muscle growth. So that's why it's important to be strong.
Also being very strong compared to your body weight ensures that you're at a low body fat percentage.
Ok and now we move on to the last topic which is why lifting 3 days per week is a very effective way to increase relative strength
Greg you used to train 5-6 days a week with a lot of volume in the past, why did you make such a drastic change and started lifting 3 days a week with low volume?
Now when talking about minimalistic training you often mention Bruce Lee's philoshophy which is to become very good at just a handful of movements and remove the unessential.
My father also gave me a very good analogy for this. Seriously this is really cool. So my parents own a small orchard of apple trees and one day I was out there with my father. And as we talked he reached up and started ripping some of the baby apples which were just beggining to grow. I found that very weird and I asked him why are you throwing some of those apples away? Don't you want to have a good harvest? And he said of course that's why I'm doing it. So apparently if you decrease the number of apples on a branch, those few apples will grow much larger than if all the apples would remain on the branch. The growth power of the tree will be focused on those few apples and they alone will produce a bigger harvest.
And I though, Damn! that must also be true with training. We're not a closed system but still, we have a limited adaptation reserve just like the tree and if we focus our efforts on just one area, or exercise we'll become very good at. But of we spread our focus on a lot of things, we become mediocre in all of them.
