The most shocking benefit of starting a ketogenic diet for me is that it actually made me much less hungry throughout the day.

How can a low carb diet make you less hungry?

The ketogenic diet is all about minimizing your carbs and upping your fats to get your body to use fat as a form of energy.

After about two to seven days of following this eating routine, you go into something called ketosis, or the state your body enters when it doesn't have enough carbs for your cells to use for energy.

Then it starts making ketones, or organic compounds that your body then uses in place of those missing carbs—and oh, it also burns fat for more energy.

Plus, being fat-adapted has some pretty awesome perks in general…

For one, you’re eating foods with higher fat content such as nuts, fatty fish, bacon, beef, cheese, and avocado… these satiating fat leaves you feeling full.

When the fat you eat hits your small intestine, it sets off a cascade of signals which includes the release of hormones such as Cholecystokinin and Peptide YY. These two hormones play a major role in appetite regulation and satiety; they leave you feeling full and satisfied.

The more satiated you are, the less likely that you're going to sneak in snacks between meals or pile on a second helping. So you feel less hungry between meals, and you don’t get “hangry” like most people.
