JUAN LORENZO SILOS JR.

Juan Lorenzo Silos Jr. (b. 8 Feb 1898; d. May 1988). Composer, conductor. Born to Juan Silos Sr. and Maria Lorenzo, he married Marcela Rigo, with whom he had seven children. His grandfather Leonardo and his uncle Rosalio were bandmasters and composers. The pre-WWII singers, the SSS Trio (Remedios, Dolores and Lourdes) and Betty Silos Climaco are his sisters. Film directors Manuel and Octavio Silos are cousins.

His father taught the young Juan how to play the bandurria as well as solfeggio, harmony and composition. At the age of 16, Silos Jr. taught rondalla to the members of the Children's Symphony Orchestra of the St. Anthony's Girls Institution. He also composed music for the rondalla, which he himself conducted.

In 1935 Silos began composing for the movies, getting his break in the LVN Pictures hit movie "Giliw Ko" under director Carlos Vander Tolosa. he composed more than 300 songs, chamber music pieces and Philippine rhapsodies. before WWII, he was musical director of 'Philippine Aires' aired over KZRM-AM. After the war, he became music director of Sampaguita and LVN Pictures, and the Far Easern University Dance Troupe.
