Why this driving game is 1950s Grand Theft Auto (GTA) // Jonny Smith |
Description: Call it the Godfather of Grand Theft Auto, call it 1950s Forza Horizon - this little driving simulator game came before any arcade or home video console was invented. As a kid of the 1980s, where we saw games like Pole Position, Outrun, Supercars, Micro Machines and many more, I loved driving computer games. My Mum bought home this 1955 Merit driving simulator game from a car boot sale. Today I still have it, and wanted to show you what life before digital driving sims was like for lucky children. It uses magnets, a joy stick and a scissor mechanism to make a car or motorbike drive around illustrated roads and scenery. Do you avoid the policeman and lamp-post, or do you go all retro GTA and cause mayhem? I revisit this slice of nostalgia with my 8-year old son Wesson who, like so many kids, enjoy Nintendo Switch and iPad games on a daily basis. What does he think of it?
