Let me explain what a ketogenic diet is. A ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet whose goal is to get your body into a state called “ketosis.” Many scientific studies have shown that putting your body into ketosis is one of the most effective ways to lose fat -- and that ketosis may have other health benefits outside of weight loss as well.

Now, most people who eat a regular diet are what scientists call “carbohydrate adapted,” which means that they burn carbohydrates as their body’s primary source of fuel. On the other hand, a person in ketosis is what scientists refer to as “fat-adapted.” That means their body produces ketone bodies from fat and uses these ketone bodies as their primary source of energy.

However, there is a dark side to the ketogenic diet that most people aren’t talking about. These are three serious health risks that you need to be aware of when following a ketogenic diet:

Number one - the keto flu. Many people report experiencing flu-like symptoms after transitioning to the ketogenic diet. Common symptoms people report include headaches, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, muscular cramps, and poor concentration.

The second risk that you need to know about is micronutrient deficiencies. Many people following a ketogenic diet are deficient in many different micronutrients because their diet is not scientifically designed.

And that brings us to the third and most serious downside to the ketogenic diet - sustainability. Studies have shown that a ketogenic diet is actually easier to sustain than a low-fat diet for the first 3-6 months.
